Sandhills Grazing (Type: Pastel)

This 11x14 pastel painting of rolling hills, cedar trees, magnificent skies and cattle grazing, depicts the Nebraska Sandhills near the Dismal River south of Thedford, NE. This painting was done in a somewhat Impressionistic style with Prismacolor Nupastels and Gioconda Pastel Pencils. This painting received an Honorable Mention Award at the Thedford Art Guild 40th Annual Member Art Show. Price: $175.00, matted and framed. Shipping is $50. Twilight Grazing (Type: Pastel)

This 11x14 pastel painting of cattle grazing in a golden field as the skies turn colors, depicts twilight in a grassy field south of Stapleton, NE. This painting was done in an Impressionistic style with Prismacolor Nupastels and Gioconda Pastel Pencils. This painting received an Award of Excellence at the Thedford Art Guild 40th Annual Member Art Show (2005) and was also selected to compete at the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs (ANAC) State Art Show in July 2005. Girl with Shovel (Type: Pastel)

This 11x14 painting of a girl playing in the water with her shovel is a portrait of my daughter (then 18 months old) playing at Merritt Reservoir. She and I camp there every summer for two weeks. It is our special time together -- she does a lot swimming, and I get lots of photos and ideas for paintings. The painting is done in a hazy, happy memory-type style, with no hard edges, lots of color and few real edges. This portrait was honored with the BEST OF SHOW Award at the Thedford Art Guild's 40th Annual Member Art Show (2005) and was thus a part of the juried state art show put on each year by the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs (ANAC). This painting was also selected as the Grand Champion of the Fine Arts Division at the Lincoln County (Nebraska) Fair in 2005.THIS PAINTING WAS DONE FOR MY DAUGHTER AND IS NOT FOR SALE.Copies of this painting, printed on cotton rag with archival ink, are available in 8x10 and 11x14 sizes. Trees in the background delineate the edge of the golden field of stubble and bright blue skies speak of summertime in Nebraska. Mid-Summer Harvest (Type: Pastel)

This 11x14 painting of hay bales sitting in a field of golden grasses shows the height the grasses grow to in the Sandhills of Nebraska. The grasses nearly obliterate the fenceline. The haybales are a mainstay for the ranchers of the Sandhills, who rely on them to supplement their cattle feed through the winter. "mid-Summer Harvest" won an Honorable Mention at the 39th Annual Thedford Art Guild Members Art Show (2004). This painting was done using Prismacolor Nupastels.THIS PAINTING IS SOLD!

Outside Attack (Type: Pastel)

This 11x14 painting depicts firefighters during a training exercise called a "live burn." A homeowner can donate a house to the fire department to use for training. Area fire department members are invited to participate in the training. To start with, little fires are lit inside the house, under stringent conditions. The firefighters then take turns putting the fire out. This gives the firefighters valuable training in putting out interior fires, under safe conditions. When the house becomes unsafe to use from the inside anymore, the training moves outside. The house is then set fire to where it will burn to the ground and firefighters practice protecting neighboring buildings and trees, etc... This is the stage the firefighters depicted here have reached. This painting was done using Prismacolor Nupastels and Gioconda Pastel Pencils. "Outside Attack" was awarded an Honorable Mention at the 39th Annual Thedford Art Guild Members Art Show (2003). THIS PAINTING IS SOLD!

Sandhills Soapweed (Type: Pastel)

This 11x14 painting depicts the ever-present soapweed, rendered under a brilliant blue Midwestern sky. The spiky-leaved plant has showy, waxy flowers and is munched on by cattle on the ranches of the Sandhills. The sharp leaves reach for the sky, as do the flower spikes. This brightly-colored 11x14 painting depicts a summer hillside covered with the lavendar-pink flower known in the Sandhills as stinkweed. Near the top of the hill is a windmill. Dove hunters love windmills like this because the doves love the autumn seeds of the stinkweed and come to windmills such as these to drink and eat their fill of the seeds. I took the photo I painted this scene from as I was driving down a friend's driveway near Thedford, NE. The haybales were such a pretty gold with the sun glinting off them, and the sunflowers added such a cheery yellow, that I couldn't help painting the scene in my mind. Ruby Throated Hummingbird (Type: Prismacolor)

8x10 Prismacolor on Rising Stonehenge paper with thin washes of iridescent watercolor on head, throat and breast. Hummingbirds visit my yard in the country every year, and I have finally done a piece depicting one of these flying jewels.We love to watch their aerial acrobatics as they zip and zoom, and we often hear their excited calls while they defend their territory.

Tomatoes and Old Colander (Type: Prismacolor)

Bright red tomatoes nestle in an antique colander. These beauties were in my garden and when I brought them in and set them on the counter in this old colander, they just screamed to be captured on paper. This 11x14 still life was done in Prismacolor pencil on Rising Stonehenge paper. This piece is currently being prepared for use in a new critique book Ann Kullberg (my colored pencil guru) is preparing for North Light Books.
